In Philly, in D.C., and in Chicago right now, all the rappers are in competition to see who can best capture the doomsday vibes of the Book of Revelation. The winner might be Lil Durk protégé Chuckyy, a new Chicago drill lightning rod with a voice that sounds like heâs rapping with nose plugs. On âBumblebee,â a single from his recent EP Tweak Till the End, his disheveled, hurried delivery makes it seem like heâs in a life-or-death time crunch. Combine that with a biblical-sounding spin on a 42 Dugg-core Michigan beat and itâs almost like youâre standing in the eye of a hurricane. And though Chuckyy has out-of-town influences, âBumblebeeâ is very much in the tradition of Chicago drill, where bone-chilling mood pieces are nothing new. His trick is a scurrying, anxiety-inducing flow that feels as if heâs inside a recording booth that will fill to the ceiling with water (like the lab in Deep Blue Sea) if he doesnât finish his verse in under two minutes.
